Guide to walking the Cleveland Way: places to stay, things to do

This National Trail punches well above its weight with its variety of walking, scenery and history. Agreements should be in place for an official summer 2012 launch, bringing the total distance of bridleway open to 200 miles. 5 miles 28 Km This section is a great introduction to the North Yorkshire coastline. At the end of the tour you can leave from either Filey station or from Scarborough, which has good connections via York.

5km This section is said to be the most strenuous of the tour, a rollercoaster of a walk up and down the Cleveland Hills, including the best walking within the park.

The Cleveland Way (National Trail Guide) by Ian Sampson 9781845137816

Managed by English Heritage and the National Trust, this former Carthusian Monastery is worth a detour. Typical Itinerary Stage 1: Helmsley to Sutton Bank 10. 30 single; 01347 838990; stephensonsofeasingwold.

Step back in time visiting Whitby Abbey, Rievaulx Abbey and Scarborough Castle• The Pennine Way takes you into isolated country. It's not too strenuous and offers a route where the peace and quiet of country life still dominate and the gentle charm of the Yorkshire Wolds leaves the walker refreshed in body and spirit. Open sections include 73 miles through Derbyshire to the South Pennines, the 47 mile Mary Towneley Loop, which runs close to Todmorden, and the 10 mile in the Yorkshire Dales.
